It is with sadness that I share the news that Earl Nitterhouse ’43 passed away on March 19, 2026. He was 101 years old. Following is his obituary.
While at SSVC he was known as Ike. He was the class treasurer. He was in the Print Shop. He was the Assistant Editor of the Year Book Staff. He was a member of the Band and Orchestra. He was on the Baseball, Basketball & Football teams. He was a member of the “S” Club.
He along with his brothers Robert ’34, Ralph ’37 & Paul ’41 and his sister Thelma Nitterhouse Romesberg ’46 attended SSVC. They all predeceased Earl.
Obituary
Earl William Nitterhouse , passed away March 19, 2026, at Shook Home in the Quarter section. He was born August 4, 1924, in Chambersburg. He was the son of the late Elizabeth (McDonald) and Robert Nitterhouse Sr.
He graduated from the Scotland School from Veteran’s Children in 1943 and attended King Street Church. Earl worked as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service from 1949-1979. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Earl enjoyed reading, music, walking, and all types of sports.
Earl is survived by his step-daughter, Jill Cramer; step great grandson, Gage Cramer; many extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Earl is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Nitterhouse; son, Thomas Nitterhouse; sisters: Thelma Romesberg ‘46 and Evelyn Nitterhouse; brothers: Robert Nitterhouse Jr. ‘34, Ralph Nitterhouse ‘37, Paul Nitterhouse ‘41; and step-grandson, Josh Cramer.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. in the Norland Cemetery with Rev. Ronald Cook officiating. Military honors will be presented by Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1499.
