Granville Waldt ’41 attended the historical marker ceremony on July 13, 2013. Gran had an opportunity to speak with MG Wesley Craig, Adjutant General of Pennsylvania. After General Craig heard Gran’s story about life at Scotland and all he has done since his start at Scotland, General Craig gave Gran one of his military coins. Typical
Gran, when he learned why the general gave him the coin, he could hardly believe it. Gran is a stalwart Scotland kid and has accomplished many things in life, all with which General Craig was quite impressed!
James Gilgore ’53: Jim Gilgore was in the States during August on his annual visit to the homeland. Jimmy was able to enjoy a family reunion and regretted not being able to get together with two alumni in Chambersburg,
Nancy Oliver ’53 and Peggy Moore Stout ’54. Jimmy lives in Germany and was the European Commander for the VFW. His post feeds wounded warriors every week. Additionally, he was featured about a year or so ago in one of the veteran magazines. And, he volunteers at the Lundstedt Hospital. Jimmy Gilgore, truly one of the good guys!
Lorraine Fochler ’61 sent a note for all alumni. “I wish to thank all my classmates and those other students who sent me “well‐wishes” during my recovery period. The cards were surely a part of getting well. My daughter said I was the “card queen”. She was amazed at the flood of response. No one can understand the deep connection that will always be a part of the “children” of SSVC. We were certainly our own caregivers. I’m remiss in not sending this earlier, but I am truly thankful for the good wishes.” We are grateful to have Lorraine with us!
Alice Negley Sullivan ’62 is living in Lewisville, TX for 45 years. While working in Washington, DC, Alice met a nice Navy man who she married and they lived happily ever after!
James E. Rhodes, III ’64 passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on February 21, 2013. Nancy, Jim’s wife of 44 years, asked us to pass along her thanks to alumni and friends for all the cards, notes, flowers and prayers at the time of Jim’s death. Nancy said our expressions of sympathy will always be remembered. After graduation, Jim served honorably in the Navy during the Viet Nam conflict from 1964 to 1967. Jim continued his service to his fellow veterans by working at Scotland School for 17 years. Jim was a true patriot and was a member of numerous local veterans’ organizations, including the American Legion Post 612, St. Thomas, where he was a life
member.
John Sheaffer ’66 and Sally Sheaffer ’65: We wish to thank all the alumni and friends of Scotland for their prayers, cards and concern shown for our family on the deaths of our Dad, Douglas Beck and our sister, Linda “Bupps” Sheaffer Price ’69 during the month of June
2013. Thank you and God bless all of you. Thank you also to those of you who made a memorial donation in Linda Bupps’ name to the Alumni Association. We appreciate your thoughtfulness. We are also grateful for your donations in Bupps’ memory. You warmed our hearts and helped your Association. Again, thank you and bless you.
Bill Lekosky ’72: Bill sent along his thanks to Jim Lowe ’70 and the officers for devoting their time to the home we ALL grew up at. Bill goes on to say, “Who would have thought that we would reminisce about the home most of us waited to leave behind us. We were too immature to understand what our home would mean to us all these
many years which have passed.” Bill does have a point! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Bill.
Shelia Bradley –Vitruk ‘77 and Gayla Bradley Evanson ‘79 attended reunion this year. Talk about bubbly and beautiful! Neither sister has changed and they have wonderful families plus careers that keep them pretty busy. Glad they found time to come to reunion!
Dr. Herb Turner, III ’79: Herb Turner was recently published in SAS Institute, Inc.’s publication as a “success story”. This will not come as a surprise to anyone who knows Herb. Herb‘s recognition by SAS came from Herb helping his students gain a competitive edge with a course that prepares them to earn a globally recognized SAS credential. Herb is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. For the record, Herb’s course was a first‐of‐its‐kind curriculum to help students earn the SAS certification. Kudos to you, Herb! Herb gives credit to his “Scotland discipline” and said, “Our School may be closed, but the lessons learned will live on for generations!”
Norman Waters ’88: My apologies to Norman for incorrectly listing his class year in the last (issue #117) newsletter. Norman graduated in 1988.
Erik‐Jon Martinez ‘98 received a “Scotland Band” jacket in 1998. He can still wear it and proved it with a picture on Facebook. Still looking good, Erik‐Jon! By the way, Dana Felton ‘96 says she still has hers! Maybe we could see all the Scotland Band jackets sometime on campus?
Kenneth Peeples II ‘99 just received his Master’s and is now going for his Doctorate at Temple University. Congratulations, Ken!

Kennetha Peeples, 2000 has been busy since she left Scotland. Kennetha is a model, an author, owns her own production company, and has a full time job. But most important to Kennetha is raising two little guys! Keep up the great work Kennetha!
Tierra Ryan, 2000 was able to fit reunion into her busy schedule this year. She was there with her father, Tony Ryan ‘64 and aunt and uncle, Ronnie ‘65 and Liza Ryan.
