From the Desk of the President – Issue No. 118 ‐ Fall 2013
Dear Alumni, Former Faculty and Staff and Friends,
WOW! What an exciting and busy time it has been for the Alumni Association. June 7‐9 we held our Alumni Reunion and the turnout was ASTOUNDING! It truly is a reminder that we have remained a strong Scotland Family. The weekend was a busy one with meetings, tours, dinners, dancing, and most importantly creating new Scotland memories. Elections were held for officers and I am honored to serve as the President for another term. I would like to take a moment to recognize our alumni officers: Vice President – Rick Gates ‘69, Secretary – Sally Sheaffer ‘65, Treasurer – Ken Beck ‘74, and Sergeant‐at‐Arms Randy Gates ‘71 and David Shaw ‘75. A very special thank you to George ‘Satch’ Croutz ’70 for his many, many years of dedicated service to the Alumni Association and as serving in the capacity of Vice President for most of those years. THANK YOU Satch for the endless amount of hours you have contributed to make our Association what it is today!
SSVC makes history! A state historical marker commemorating the Scotland School for Veterans’ Children was unveiled on July 13, 2013. The ceremony was amended by many alumni, former faculty and staff, and local supporters in the community. This marker will tell the story of what our school did for so many veterans’ and their families. As the day was somber it also was a blissful occasion knowing that the memory of SSVC will also be alive.
Now for another exciting upcoming event – our 10th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament! Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 5,
2013! Each year our tournament has been a huge success and we couldn’t do it without your help. THANK YOU to each of our sponsors, volunteers, and players! You are the ones who make this tournament successful! A letter and flyer are enclosed outlining the details of this year’s tournament and sponsorship opportunities. We will also continue the ALUMNI CHALLENGE. All you need to do is send a $5.00 donation and this will get your name and class in the program. Are you up for the challenge?
I hope to see you at our tournament but if you cannot make it, I hope to see you at the Homecoming dinner on November 2, 2013. This
year’s event will be held at the VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg. Please see the secretary’s report for additional information. And please be sure to pass the word regarding our events! An invitation is extended to all alumni and the extended family of former faculty and staff for all alumni events. The Association works hard on planning our events and strives to keep our family together, even more so with the closing of our school. We surely hope all can join us for any (or maybe even all) of our special events!
Speaking of special events. There are two more upcoming events you need to know about. On September 14th is the picnic in Scotland Village and September 21st is the “flapjack” breakfast fundraiser at Applebee’s in Chambersburg. All alumni and friends of SSVC are invited to all the Association events.
In closing, I hope everyone is taking the time to enjoy their summer and Ruby and I look forward to seeing you at the golf tournament in October!
Respectfully,
James A. Lowe
President
SSVC Alumni Association
