Good morning Scotland family & friends, It is with sadness that I tell you of the passing of Joann Hersh on May 31, 2106. She was a science teacher and the creator of the health assistance program from 1978-1984. Mrs. Hersh was a lovely, kind person.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 11, 2016, in The Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church Street, Waynesboro, PA. Burial will be private in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville. There will be no public viewing, however the family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., Saturday morning, in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Waynesboro YMCA, 810 E. Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268; The Waynesboro Historical Society, 138 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268; or The Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268.

OBITUARY
Joann H. (Hollinger) Hersh, 78 Resided in Waynesboro, died Tuesday night, May 31, 2016 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born March 6, 1938 in Hanover, PA, she was the daughter of the late Jerre H. and Mary E. (Myers) Hollinger. She lived her early life in the Manchester, MD area. Mrs. Hersh graduated from Manchester High School with the class of 1956. She later graduated from Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD in 1959 and Shippensburg State Teacher’s College in 1974, where she majored in Biology and Secondary Education. She received her Masters of Science Degree from Penn State University in 1977 and her Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow Designation in 1987 from the National Association of Life Underwriters. She and her husband of over 56 years, Richard I. Hersh, were married on July 25, 1959 in Littlestown, PA. They moved to Old Mill Road in 1986. Mrs. Hersh worked as an RN at the Waynesboro Hospital from 1959 until 1969. She later taught science and health assistance at the Scotland School for Veterans Children and was a longtime State Farm Insurance Agent in Wayne Heights. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the board of directors, Waynesboro Hospital Board, Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, Rotary Club of Waynesboro, The Waynesboro Historical Society, where she was past president, Franklin County Life Underwriters Association, Renfrew Institute, Pen Mar Development Board at Fort Ritchie, Waynesboro Country Club, and the Waynesboro YMCA, where she served on the board of directors. Mrs. Hersh enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing golf, and traveling with her husband. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Jeffery L. Hersh and his wife, Margaret of Waynesboro, VA, Douglas A. Hersh and his wife, Tracy of Burke, VA, and Debra L. Thompson and her husband, Grant of Glen Allen, VA; four grandchildren, Lauren Hersh, Gillian Hersh, Genevieve Hersh, and Jake Thompson; six sisters, Mary Louise Bitzell of York, PA, Jerrietta R. Hollinger of New York City, Linda Ingram of Mechanicsburg, Darlene Morrison of Hampstead, MD, Marie Hollinger of Silver Spring, MD, and Sharon Reed of Manchester, MD; two brothers, Nathan Hollinger of Manchester, MD and Marvin Hollinger of Holland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
