SSVC Taps: Mrs. Mary Norcross (93), SSVC Cook passed away 4/2/24

Good morning, it is with sadness that I share the news that Mrs. Mary Norcross passed away 4/2/2024.  Mrs. Norcross was a cook at SSVC in the mid to late 70’s.

Obituary

Mary M. Norcross, 93, a resident of Transitions Health Care Shook Home, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Born October 10, 1930, in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Robert C. Miller and Mildred C. Snyder Miller, and widow to the late Ray E. Norcross, who passed away on January 30, 1976.

A 1949 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, Mary soon thereafter entered the food services industry. She began as the first cook of the local Meals on Wheels program, where she was employed for 5 years. She was then a cook for the SSVC for 5 years, and lastly worked 19 years as a cook for the Shook Home, before retiring in 1997. Following her retirement, she enjoyed babysitting.

A 60 plus year member of Central Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg, she dedicated numerous hours of her time and gifts to the church. She taught Sunday School classes, was a Cub Scout Den Mother, was on the board of sessions and trustees, and sang in the church choir. She utilized her talents in the kitchen, cooking many meals for the church over the years as a member of the funeral committee and the delicious sauerkraut supper. Although she was a talented baker, making many cookies, fudge, and cakes; her specialty was baked beans. Mary and her sisters would always consider local shut-ins, doing favors for them during the Christmas season. She loved the Central Presbyterian church basketball games, rarely missing any of her son’s games over the years. She also coached the churches girls’ basketball team to the league championship. In her free time she also liked to play the slots. Mary’s greatest joys in life were in loving and caring for her husband, children, family, friends, and the Lord.

Mary is survived by her children, Judy Szankovics of Allentown, PA, Michael Norcross (Debra) of Linglestown, PA, Kimberly S. Brown (Terry), of Chambersburg, PA, and Timothy Norcross (Debra) of Forest Hill, MD; daughter in law, Joan Norcross of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Albert “Cork” Norcross; four brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services for Mary will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at 1:00 PM, at Central Presbyterian Church, 40 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Scott Bowerman will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Central Presbyterian Church at the address above. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. Memories and condolences may be shared on her Book of Memories page at geiselfuneralhome.com
